Pornography in India

In India, many popular porn websites are banned on most popular networks,  But there is a lot of confusion about these bans. watching porn in India is not a crime, but what about accessing blocked porn websites?
Before you understand what happens if you access banned websites in India, you should know what exactly has been the history of porn ban in India.
The Department of Telecom(DoT), in the year 2015, had asked internet service providers to take down as many as 857 websites in a bid to control cyber crime but after receiving criticism from the authorities, it partially rescinded the ban. Websites that did not promote child pornography were unbanned. The ban from the government came after a lawyer filed a petition in Supreme Court arguing that online porn encourage sex crimes.
 Pornography in India

This year the topic is again in news because the government this year once again directed the ISPs to ban 827 websites following an order by the Uttarakhand High Court. The court asked the centre to ban pornographic websites in India, citing an incident from Dehradun where a 10th standard girl was raped by four of her seniors. The accused later told Police that they did so after watching pornographic content on the web.
A report by NCPCR notes that while improved penetration of smartphones provides opportunities for accessing useful material for learning purposes, lack of digital literacy and online safety measures exposes children to the hazards of cyber crime.

“When it comes to the fight against cyber crimes, especially against children, in India we are at the bottom of it all,” says Alamu R, who ‘flags’ videos for YouTube. A researcher with Delhi’s JNU, Alamu has been tracking videos on social media, mainly YouTube, that are violent, obscene, and can cause psychological damage to children.

According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), during 2014-16, Uttar Pradesh ranked first, with 21.4 per cent of the crimes, followed by Maharashtra, with 19.3 per cent. Even though there is no separate mention of cyber crimes against children in the database, activists and law enforcement agencies agree that such instances are on the rise, across all sections of society. The issue of human trafficking, which has got a fillip due to the reach of the internet, is a cause of concern. All the activity being underground, the numbers on human trafficking are hazy but according to a 2012 report by the International Labour Organisation, 21 million are enslaved and a large number of them are children.
Parents often give internet-enabled smart devices to their children way too early. “One of the most important things that parents should ask themselves is whether they are giving a device too soon. While there is no clear answer, parents need to understand children and accordingly make a decision.

“When a child sees in his family all the members of family spend time on laptops and phones, it will think this is a normal course of behaviour,” points out a psychologist from NIMHANS. That needs to change.
Whatever be the court’s intentions, it’s practically impossible to stop Indians from consuming online porn content.
There are no laws against pornography in India and watching adult content privately. It’s evident that the Indian government does not have a solution to a very serious and systemic problem in the country, and is using adult sites like ours as a scapegoat,” said Corey Price, vice-president at Pornhub. “For the government to ban sites like ours that have compliant parental controls, a non-consensual take down page, and a strict terms of service is a disservice to the people of India, who have become one of the largest connoisseurs of adult content.”
For the world’s third-biggest porn-watching nation (after the US and the UK), the mobile traffic share to Pornhub has grown 121% between 2013 and 2017, the highest for any country.

Even for those who are not that tech savvy, there is a massive market of offline pornography. Porn DVDs or porn on a flash drive can be found on sale everywhere. Then, Indian law does not ban porn. Watching porn in private is not a criminal offence,
Banning porn is not the answer. Watching porn is a personal choice. Porn can affect people but it does not override their values. People with aggressive tendencies or with personality issues might get affected though. consequences on children, parents should have control. When we ban something, the curiosity increases. And there are many sources for this kind of thing on the Internet. Children are curious or under peer pressure to watch such video.

There is ample evidence to show there is no correlation between access to pornographic material and incidents of sexual assault. Also, it is not that all pornographic material is shot non-consensually or is exploitative in nature. In fact, there is emerging area of feminist pornography. If the question is of prevention, you might as well strengthen sex education in the country. People have to resort to videos on the Internet to clarify their doubts and that is not a good thing. Sex-positive education should be included in school curriculums. We need to strengthen mechanisms to tackle cases of revenge porn and video...
that promote violence against women. We also need to engage with website providers instead of banning them.

Pollution levels are increasing in many areas of Delhi-NCR. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has also crossed the 1200 level. It is as if the air has dissolved the halahl (according to Hindu beliefs, the poison or poison emitted during the churning of the sea). Due to the light rain on Sunday morning, people hoped that now air pollution would be relieved, but it did not happen.
At the same time, AQI has reached 1241 in Ghaziabad, while the Air Quality Index has reached 900 in Alipur, Delhi, 986 in Naril, 979 in Anand Vihar. Due to which pollution measuring machines failed. According to experts, the machines installed in the city to measure AQI can measure up to a maximum of 500 levels. If it is more than this, it becomes difficult to estimate.

Here are some already visible effects:

[1] Impaired lungs.

According to a Centre for Science and Environment report titled 'Body Burden: Lifestyle Diseases', every third child in Delhi already has impaired lungs. This is only going to get worse if the pollution is not tackled at emergency levels.

[2] Primary trigger for Cancer.

By the year 2020, more than 1.73 million new cancer cases will most likely be recorded where the 'primary triggers' would be air pollution, tobacco, alcohol and diet change. According to Dr Arvind Kumar, chest surgeon from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, young patients in Delhi are losing their lives due to air pollution.

[3] Diabetes.

According to a study undertaken by Washington University in USA, one out of seven new cases of diabetes were caused due to air pollution.
"Our research shows a significant link between air pollution and diabetes globally," said Ziyad Al-Aly Ziyad, the study's senior author and an assistant professor of medicine at Washington University.
The research shows that lesser pollution may lead to a decrease in diabetes cases. This applies particularly to India where pollution levels are dangerous. Not to mention, Delhi which has become a gas chamber.

[4] Mental illness.

The research conducted by the University of Cincinnati shows that poor children are more susceptible to the effects of air pollution with disorders related to anxiety and suicidality.

"This study is the first to show an association between daily outdoor air pollution levels and increased symptoms of psychiatric disorders, like anxiety and suicidality, in children," said Cole Brokamp from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

[5] Newborn ICU admissions.

In US, a study found that newborn ICU admissions increased from about 4% to as much as 147%. Looking at the pollution levels in India, it safe we assume we are close to 147% than 4%.
